Head Gasket Replacement Price
October 29, 2010
I have a 1992 Lexus LS400 and I've been getting lots of white smoke out of the exhaust when I start the car. Everyone seems to think it's a head gasket problem. Is this serious and expensive to have fixed? I'm retired and can't afford much. I was happy to learn… More tham $1,000 to fix a head gasket, look at your oil in the engine and if it looks milky colored and if you have been losing antifreeze and wondering where it's going you have a bad head gasket or intake gasket.

it probably is a head and or head gasket. the only way to know for sure is to pull it apart. just pulling off the bad head and having just that side repaired is not a smart thing to do. especially since its pretty much all apart(this is assuming its a v-6)meaning have the other head also taken off and checked. just replacing the head gaskets im sure will not be the only thing needed to be done. im sure both heads will and probably should be resurfaced. so your looking at at least 700 dollars to pos 1200 dollars. if you run into a problem like a crack in a head also, then add a few hundred dollars more. i know you say your retired and im sure money is tight but a Lexus is not a poor mans car. even if it was bought used. what im getting at is no matter what goes wrong with the car its gonna be expensive to fix. so you may want to get rid of it in the future and get something cheaper to fix if it breaks down. good luck with your problem.
